London SE1 website team

Southwark Cathedral's girl choristers made their radio debut on Wednesday with Wednesday's live broadcast of Choral Evensong on BBC Radio 3.

The cathedral's Great Choir, which includes the girl choristers, sang Choral Evensong.

The service also marked the first broadcast of Stephen Tanner's canticles specially composed this year for Southwark Cathedral. The psalms sung were 84 and 122.

The Old Testament Lesson was read by the Canon Pastor Bruce Saunders and the New Testament lesson by the Sub Dean Andrew Nunn. The Prayers were led by Canon Jane Steen.

The anthem was Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. The service climaxed with the singing of the Te Deum in B flat (Stanford) to mark the centenary of Southwark Priory becoming a cathedral.

• The broadcast can be heard 'on demand' via the Radio 3 website until 4pm on Wednesday 12 October.
