A statement issued by Lambeth Palace on Monday confirmed that the Archbishop of Canterbury had ordered an investigation into the incident – which reportedly took place outside Suchard Free House in Crucifix Lane near London Bridge – under the Church of England's new clergy discipline procedure.

The statement continued: "In the light of all the evidence submitted to him Dr Williams has determined ... that no further action should be taken."
