Ansel Adams at 100 at the Hayward

Farouk Campbell

Ansel Adams’ graphic revelation of the American landscape through black and white photography is currently on show at the Hayward.

Showing both an interest in the play of light and the multifarious abstract formations existing within the natural world, the exhibition focuses on Adams' early development as an artist and reveals his less well known works as well as the grand vistas of Yosemite Valley and the stark desert of Arizona. What is evident from the 114 images on display is Adams' passion for photography and love of the environment. Although many of his images show the beauty of nature they also show the transformation of photography from mere documentation to expressive art.
