Tate river link closer to reality

The long-awaited river link between Tate Modern and Tate Britain is a step closer to reality after the new Millbank pier was floated into position.

The £1.8 million Millbank Millennium Pier was designed by David Marks and Julia Barfield, the husband-and-wife team responsible fore the London Eye. The
lead designer was Beckett Rankine Partnership.

Angela Bulloch, shortlisted for the Turner Prize, designed the lighting scheme with colours that change with the rise and fall of the tide plus 60 twinkling lights.

The pontoon and brow were constructed by in Rochester, Kent and were today due to be towed up the Thames to Lambeth Reach.

A river link between the two Tate galleries has long been planned. In Tate Modern's first year Bankside and Millbank were linked by a free bus service.
