SE1 suffers surprise power failure

London SE1 website team

Electricity in SE1 failed for 35 minutes from 6.20pm on Thursday

Crowds of commuters have jammed the streets around Waterloo as trains were cancelled at Waterloo and Charing Cross Stations "due to an emergency". There were also large crowds in Borough High Street locked out of the stations.

Southwark Station was closed and, as the passengers made their way over Blackfriars Bridge to Blackfriars Station, a pub was evacuated.

The London Eye was also halted.

London News Network in Upper Ground suffered loss of power but was able to make its roof camera available to the national ITN News channel which broadcast live pictures of blacked out SE1.

Just before 8pm packed trains began leaving Waterloo East Station.
