Southwark Police have warned local residents to beware of strangers hugging them in the street.

"Since February we have have had five offences of what's called 'hugger mugger' up round London Bridge Railway Station and Borough tube," Inspector Richard Barton told Borough, Bankside & Walworth Community Council this week.

"Basically, very late at night drunken people are being hugged and their mobile phones removed from them."

Inspector Barton is responsible for the local policing teams in the north-west of Southwark.
