Julius Caesar at the Menier Theatre

This show serves to remind that even a mediocre performance of a commanding story still proves effective.

The stage set was used well, with a single set accommodating all scenes. Also, the versatility of any given actor could be seen through his or
her portrayal of many different characters. The players were well suited for their parts, and there is no lack of talent in the cast.

The detriment, however, was in certain performers putting strong emotion into seemingly minor lines, while letting particular key lines pass as if they were non-essential. This resulted in the audience's attention being placed heavily on lines which are insignificant in comparison to some others, which passed without due consideration.

The final effect still managed to portray the principal thrust of the tragedy, yet it was not as powerful as it might have been.
• Julius Caesar is at the Menier Theatre (Chocolate Factory) in Southwark Street until Saturday 27 March.
