This exhibition will be the first major gallery show in the UK of Annette Messager (b. 1943, lives and works in Paris), widely regarded as one of Europe's leading contemporary artists and the winner of the prestigious Golden Lion award at the 2005 Venice Biennale.
Spanning almost four decades of Messager's career, it highlights the distinctive themes of her work, in which everyday materials - including newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, cloth, wool and embroidery - are transformed to create extraordinary artworks that explore the fears and fantasies beneath the surface of daily life. The Messengers will cover her varied and prolific output from the intimate and conceptually driven pieces of the early 1970s to the very large sculptural installations of the past 15 years.
The exhibition is organised by the Pompidou Centre, Paris.
