Handing down the memory cloth

This event is in the past. This is an archive page for reference.

The culmination of a collaborative research project between community organisations in Southwark and Lambeth, staff and students in the School of Graphic Design at the London College of Communication (LCC) and the Women's Design + Research Unit.

The project has been inspired by the recent growth of interest from contemporary artists and designers into the history, production and making of objects based upon traditional craft and design methods. The exhibition will feature examples of craft items produced by members of the local community, historical photographs of crafts from the area and the research findings of the interviews undertaken by LCC students.

A 'memory wall' will be created during this exhibition as members of the public will have the opportunity to share in a memory about craft traditions or what it is to live and work in the Elephant and Castle area. A 36-page publication designed by LCC students accompanies the event.

Members of the public are invited to bring along a memory about craft traditions in their family or a memory about the Elephant and Castle area.

The project is being organised by students in the School of Graphic Design, LCC and the Women's Design + Research Unit in partnership with local community groups. It has been sponsored by a generous grant from the Royal Female School of Art Foundation.
