West to East: Life in the City at National Theatre

This exhibition brings together 40 new watercolours, charcoals, linocuts and acrylics by Hilary Rosen. These evocative images explore some of the world’s great cities, including Istanbul, Marrakech, Delhi and Washington. London also features: intense watercolours focus on the Thames and the City of London.

The large charcoal drawings depict the psychological development of human relationships, exploring not only experiences of alienation but also the interaction between the person and their environment. The new series of Linocuts encompasses the various themes of the city paintings and the charcoal drawings. In contrast, the still lives present a sensual and iridescent portrayal of exotic flora and fauna. These richly coloured works have been a major theme in Rosen’s work for over a decade.

Hilary Rosen trained at the Royal College of Art and has exhibited widely in Europe, North America and India. She has work in public, private and corporate collections around the world. She lives in London. The artist’s method is to start with small watercolour sketches in situ and then to recreate larger works in her studio.
