Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a 21-year-old man - who was critically injured in a collision in New Kent Road on Monday morning - died in hospital.

Police were called at 10.35am on Monday 19 December to reports of a white Ford Transit van in collision with two pedestrians in New Kent Road at the junction with Falmouth Road.

The air ambulance was called to the scene and the road remained closed for several hours.

The two pedestrians, who were crossing the road at a designated crossing, were taken by ambulance to a south London hospital.

A 21-year-old man was in a critical condition and later died; a 22-year-old woman suffered minor injuries.

Officers from the Road Death Investigation Unit at Catford are handling the case.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or the events leading up to the collision, is asked to contact the witness appeal line on 020 8285 1574.

The driver of the van, a man aged 43, stopped at the scene. He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and has been bailed to return to a south London police station in early February 2012.
