The investigation of a routine adultery case by private detective Jake Gittes (Nicholson) on behalf of Ida Sessions (Dunaway) – who is pretending to be Evelyn Mulwray - slowly uncovers a vast conspiracy that revolves around water supplies to areas of Los Angeles. Corruption, murder, deception, red herrings, family secrets and fisticuffs abound. Throughout Gittes flippantly offers incorrect explanations for events and generally upsets a lot of people with his arrogance and sarcasm.
