Thames bridges get special Olympic lighting

Six river crossings linking SE1 with Westminster and the City are hosting nightly light shows as part of London's Olympic and Paralympic celebrations.

Until 10 September the Golden Jubilee bridges, Waterloo Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge, Millennium Bridge, Southwark Bridge and London Bridge will have light displays every night from 9.30pm till 5am, with special effects on the hour, every hour.

The Greater London Authority has spent more than £1.2 million on the bridge lighting project including grant funding to the bridge's owners, the City of Westminster and the City of London Corporation.

Some of the equipment installed for this summer's light shows will remain in place permanently as a legacy of the games.

The lighting on the six bridges complements the colour-changing lighting recently installed at Tower Bridge.
