PARISH OF WATERLOO: RELIEF VERGER/CARETAKER

Verger/Caretaker is concerned daily to:

• Uphold the dignity of worship in St John’s Church.
• To ensure the good running of the St John’s Church and the Creative Crypt
• To care for the St John’s security and maintenance
• To welcome all who enter the church.

Duties

The Verger/Caretaker is responsible to the Business Manager on a day to day basis. Together, their work plays an important part in ensuring the proper functioning of St John’s Church as place of worship and a Community Facility.

This job specification gives an outline of the main duties involved, although it is almost impossible to itemise each duty. The verger/caretaker may deal each day with many minor matters that make it possible for the church to run smoothly.

In additional to the regular duties, special services and other events vary the routine of the Verger/Caretaker.

Hours of Work

Monday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Tuesday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m
Wednesday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m
Thursday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m

Totalling 28 hours for the approximate period of three months from the date of commencement.

The Care of St John’s Church buildings

• To have overall responsibility for opening the church each day.

• To be responsible for cleaning, maintain and preparing the Church and chapel with liturgical vestments, candlesticks, communion vessels and plate. To order necessary supplies and stores.

• In collaboration with the Business Manager and other Church officials to ensure that St John’s Church and St John’s Crypt are kept clean and in good order. At all times, to pay special attention to detail and to ensure the highest standard of care.

• To work each day a schedule of cleaning and maintenance so that the church
buildings maintain their condition and appearance.

• To perform such other duties as are reasonable requested by the, Vicar, Business
Manager or other responsible persons and attend meeting as requested.

Liturgical Services

• There may be times when it will be necessary to be formally attired.

Security

• At all times during working hours, to keep a vigilant eye on the church buildings. During the day, regularly to check the church and to maintain a presence around the whole site.

• To ensure that the security alarms are functioning.

Ministry of Welcome

• So far as duties permit, to welcome visitors as and when required.

• To help maintain good public relations, particularly in relations to visitors and users.

Health and safety at Work

• To abide by the parish’s Health & Safety Policy to ensure that it is advised to and acted upon by other staff and users.

• To know the locations of all fire fighting apparatus and what to do in an emergency.

Concerts and Other Events

• To be available at St. John’s Church for evening concerts, conferences, events and services outside normal working hours in accordance with the rota provision, for which overtime will be payable.

• To help set to up and remove all contents and furniture required for concerts, plays, events and services and restore the Church to its normal setting afterwards.

Good Order

• To ensure that decorum is always maintained with St John’s Church.

• To treat visitors/users in friendly, tactful and helpful manner

• To communicate all messages, and report all defects to the Vicar or the Churchwardens so that the appropriate advice or action can be taken, and in order to keep good lines of communication.

• To operate within the spirit and the detail of the Churches’ Equal Opportunity Policy.
