6 month contract (subject to availability of postholder)

About this role

We’re looking for a highly motivated and capable cook with a real passion for preparing popular, healthy and nutritious meals. You will have a ‘hands on’ approach to all areas of the kitchen and possess excellent communication and organisational skills. You will be a quick learner who can effortlessly fit into an existing established environment leading a small team of volunteers.
You will manage all aspects of food preparation and purchasing, production and presentation of meals while consistently providing high quality products for up to 30 clients a day.

Essential Functions (Duties include but are not limited to)
• Ensure organised and clean storage areas for all food
• Ensure that all food items are properly handled and stored and properly rotated i.e. first in, first out
• Prepare food according to specifications for the meal service and any other occasion as required
• Order and shop for food required for the kitchen
• Maintain high sanitation standards throughout the area of responsibility in line with current Environmental and Health Regulations including risk assessments, COSSH
• Maintain clean and orderly storage areas
• Clean your workstation "as-you-go" and leave it stocked and clean
• Work with the volunteers to create specials to provide additional menu variety and use up available food
• Maintain control over food security through regular inventories and correct lock up procedures and production methods.

Experience/ Knowledge
• Basic understanding of professional cooking and knife handling skills
• Understanding and knowledge of safety, sanitation and food handling procedures
• Previous cooking experience of simple nutritious meals maybe in a cafe/pub type setting
Skills/Aptitude
• Relaxed personality with excellent communication skills
• Commitment to providing a nutritional and varied midday food service paying attention to any dietary needs
• Ability to take direction
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure
• Must have problem solving abilities, be self-motivated and organized
• Must be able to occasional evening/weekends
• Must be able to speak, read and understand basic cooking directions
Qualifications
• Food Hygiene Certificate (or willing to undertake appropriate training)

About Southwark Irish Pensioners Project

We are a small charity based in Bermondsey, SE1 working with elderly Irish people.
We have a day service Tuesday to Thursday providing lunches and a variety of activities and a community support service outreach support and befriending.
