Simon Hughes elected Lib Dem president

Simon Hughes, MP for North Southwark and Bermondsey, has been elected president of the Liberal Democrats with a large majority.

There was a 47.3% turnout of party members with Simon Hughes polling 24,333 votes. His rival Lembit Opik MP polled 10,002.

New party president Simon Hughes, who was an unsuccessful candidate for Mayor of London last June and now succeeds Lord Dholakia, will be installed during the party conference at Bournemouth this month.
