Paul Klee at the Hayward

Crystal Lindsay

An exhibition subtitled 'The Nature of Creation' implies its vital source to today's painter and the co-curator, artist, Bridget Riley, indeed acknowledges a inspirational debt to Klee.

His experience of taking a line 'for a walk' but seeing colour possessing him reveals his virtuosity in the exploration itself. A trained musician, he saw painting as having the freest abstract potential of all. We are shown it here in a multiplicity of fertile thoughts, drawn from a vast case of work. 'A defined today is over and done for' he told his students seventy years ago. See these images and you'll find the dew still on them.
