Businesses in Kennington Road have praised a £90,000 scheme that has seen free short term parking bays for customers and deliveries introduced outside shops.
The scheme involved the reconstruction of the wide pavement on the western side of Kennington Road between Hercules Road and Lambeth Road.
"This is an excellent example of how a small scheme can improve the local environment and improve facilities for pedestrians so as to support local businesses," says Cllr Nigel Haselden, deputy cabinet member for transport and parking on Lambeth Council.
"I was particularly pleased that we could, in partnership with TfL, amend the parking controls in an area where short term parking was previously impossible.
"The scheme has been delivered through close co-operation between the council, the business community and TfL and I am pleased that it has received the "thumbs up" from residents and businesses in the vicinity."
Peter Neocleous from Peter's Gents Hair Stylist said: "The work was carried out very well with a good team and with little inconvenience to my business.
"Creating the step was an excellent proposal as the steepness of the footway has now been eliminated which caused a problem to wheelchair users and people with prams in the past.
"The area looks much better now and the new parking bays are helping my business."
