Police were called shortly after 2.30am on Thursday to reports of a stabbing outside J's nightclub on the Old Kent Road.

On arrival police discovered a 19-year-old man suffering stab wounds.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman says that it appears that a fight broke out between two groups inside the club, and after those involved were ejected from the club, this fight spilled out on to the street outside.

Shortly after the incident three men – all aged 20 – attended a south London hospital. It is believed these men were involved in the incident. One man received treatment for a stab wound and was discharged; the other two men had sustained minor injuries.

Three men – all aged 21 – have been arrested in connection with the incident and taken to a south London police station, where they remain in custody.

"In addition to a comprehensive investigation into the incident, we will be carrying out a review of the nightclub's response to the incident and security arrangements, and if any failings are identified, they will be dealt with robustly," says Ch Supt Malcolm Tillyer, Southwark borough commander.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Southwark CID on 020 7232 6112; if you wish to remain anonymous please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
