London SE1 website team

Simon Hughes, the well-respected MP for North Southwark and Bermondsey, is set to announce on Tuesday his intention to seek nomination as the Liberal Democrat candidate in the 2004 London mayoral elections.

Susan Kramer, who unsuccessfully stood in the first mayoral elections, and outspoken Southwark-based environmental campaigner Donnachadh McCarthy have already announced their campaigns for the Lib Dem canditature.

Labour last month selected deputy mayor Nicky Gavron as its candidate to take on Ken Livingstone in the race for control of City Hall, whilst there are 11 hopefuls for the Conservative nomination, including former transport minister Steven Norris and ex-model Nikki Page.
