Amalia Moruzzi, who until recently presided over Borough Cafe has died at home in Parma Italy after a long illness.

For years the cafe in Park Street on the edge of Borough Market opened before first light for market traders. More recently actors and film stars such as Sean Connery and Gwyneth Paltrow have dined there whilst filming on location in the market.

The reputation for bubble and squeak spread to London guide books published in America.

Earlier this year Amalia's daughter Marianzena closed the Borough Cafe which faced threat of redevelopment from Network Rail's Thameslink 2000 plans.

Following news of Mama's death, the cafe doorstep has flowers and a Padre Pio candle left by former customers.
