Ghosts of the Abyss at the IMAX

Steven Schrimpf

Engineered exclusively for IMAX cinemas, Ghosts of the Abyss (U) is Academy Award winning director James Cameron's documentary of the legendary Titanic that inspired his signature film.

This showing is 3D with Cameron leading another expedition to the wreckage. He tastefully blends animations with dramatized recreations. The effect is a continuously shifting visual focus that reverts the film toward the tragedy of the lives lost when The Ship sank rather than drifting too far into simple historic significance.

His final product is a film that combines the historical accuracy and theatrical simplicity of a documentary with the dramatic grip of a Hollywood production, educating the audience on the history of the Titanic and its biography.

In order to convince the audience they are NOT in a history lesson and lose interest, he ingeniously incorporates melodramatic subplots that focus on many of the passengers, crew, ship designers, heroes and villains. In spite of an unsuccessful attempt at subtlety, he somehow manages to craft a really captivating film.

• Ghosts of the Abyss is at BFI London IMAX cinema £7.10 (conc £5.95).
