TfL: rumours of road closure were greatly exaggerated

London SE1 website team

Despite flashing signs displayed since last weekend, Westminster Bridge Road failed to close to traffic from midnight on 1 April.

Motorists, bus passengers and cyclists were puzzled by the variable message sign (VMS) that was displayed on Waterloo Road warning of a shutdown of Westminster Bridge Road from midnight on 1 April to midnight on 5 April and urging road users to seek an alternative route.

The SE1 website received several enquiries from organisations based on Westminster Bridge Road concerned about the lack of information on this closure of a key route.

A Transport for London spokesman has now confirmed that the sign had been programmed incorrectly and will be changed.

Westminster Bridge Road will in fact be shut to westbound traffic on Saturday and Easter Sunday while a crane operation is under way at the Urbanest development site on the corner of Lambeth Palace Road.
