A developer that was previously proposing to build 106 new homes at the junction of Borough High Street and Harper Road is instead planning a 434-room hotel.

Borough High Street: developer swaps flats for hotel

Southwark Homes Ltd submitted a planning application in 2016 for its King's Place development of 106 homes in buildings up to 13 storeys high designed by Allies and Morrison.

"This application remains undetermined by [Southwark Council] due to the on-going discussions regarding the viability for the scheme," says Southwark Homes in its latest submission to the council.

"As such, this application has stalled and the applicant has reviewed alternative options to redevelopment [sic] the site."

The company has now submitted a new planning application for a hotel-led scheme.

The site is currently occupied by the Borough Medical Centre, several shops including a pharmacy and the former Southwark children's social services offices.

The future of the two GP surgeries at the Borough Medical Centre is unclear.
