Reading Volunteer

Bookmark

About this role

Provide crucial support to a 5-8 year old who is struggling to read, by visiting your local school for two 30-minute sessions per week.

Work with the same child for the duration of the 6-week programme, leading fun and creative reading sessions to help them gain confidence and find enjoyment in reading.

Spend each session helping the child develop their ability, attitude and enjoyment to reading. This involves supporting the child to read their classroom book, helping them read a book of their choice or introducing inspiring literature and playing literacy games from the Bookmark Box.

Use the Bookmark app to pick which school you want to volunteer at, within your specified radius, and choosing sessions at times and dates that fit within your schedule.

Join our friendly team of Bookmarkers! You will have the opportunity to share tips with other volunteers at our regular events and book themed meet ups.

About Bookmark

Bookmark is on a mission to help children, age 5 - 8 develop their reading skills and confidence. On average 10 children in each class in Southwark left primary school unable to read well last year. Our volunteers are changing this by visiting their local school for two 30-minute sessions a week to help a child who is struggling to read. On the Bookmark app volunteers pick when they want to volunteer, with sessions available at the start of school or during lunchtime.
