Nye Bevan founded the NHS and started opera again at Covent Garden. A miner and a miner's son, he became the most colourful figure in Attlee's government, wanting the best in culture as well as health and welfare for all and he inspired his wife Jenny Lee who became Wilson's Minister of Culture.
