The Inner City Players are putting on the 'Ragged Child', a musical set at the end of the 19th century when many children were homeless and lived in the most impoverished of circumstances and cholera was rife.
Lord Shaftesbury, a prominent politician began to set up 'Ragged Schools' to enable children to rise above their appalling conditions. It is involving local children and adults in the cast. The Lambeth Ragged School operated in the building that is now Beaconsfield Gallery. The Beaufoy Trust which owned the building sold it and using the money built the Beaufoy Institute in what is now Black Prince Road.
