Pelo Malo

Work by Peckham-based Puerto Rican artist Jennifer Kaplan-Ortiz.

'Pelo Malo' which means 'Bad Hair' in Spanish, is a term used in Latin American countries to describe curly and Afro-Caribbean hair.

In Latin America, and several countries around the world, these hair types are viewed as an unattractive quality, prompting women to subject themselves to undergo extreme measures and processes to achieve an idealised look of straight hair.

The exhibition, which was partially funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign - www.jenniferkaplan.com/kickstart - will promote a discussion on how women perceive themselves, and how others perceive them through their hair.

The event will kick off with a launch event with speakers in which community agencies and decision makers will be invited as well as local residents.
