One of the most colourful and ancient areas of London, it was on the main route to the continent and the pilgrimage route to Canterbury.
After being famous for its pubs, theatres and brothels it became an industrial area 'with slums of Dickensian proportions'.
Now it has become the playground of London with Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe with other galleries and fringe theatres.
