May 2021 marks 70 years since the opening of the Festival of Britain, intended as a 'tonic to the nation' following the Second World War, and showcasing the best of British arts and industrial design, science and technology.
Join The National Archives for this special event celebrating the festival and explore some of the most exquisite, evocative and unique collections held at The National Archives and The Southbank Centre Archive.
Sarah Castagnetti will take you inside The National Archives' collection - a real treasure trove of records created by the Festival of Britain Office - the official government body tasked with organising the event. Sarah will reveal to you minutes of meetings, plans and drawings, art work and photographs.
Clare Wood will then introduce you to Southbank Centre's Festival of Britain collection which includes souvenirs, scrapbooks and family photographs as well as oral histories and written memories. All of which provide evocative personal perspectives on the Festival which complement and illuminate the official records.
