Winning project: Art Spaces lead global ecology of ideas, by architects Manuel Shvartzberg and Yiannis Kanakakis with writer Fabian Faltin

With the development of digital technology, new forms of visual art have emerged and there are pressures on performance spaces to be more flexible to allow amateur and professional artists to sit side by side and to house different activities in one building. In September 2007, RIBA London and Arts Council England launched a competition to explore how today's architects might respond to the challenge of creating art spaces; spaces that reflect the changing lifestyles and expectations of audiences, new and changing art forms, the need to address climate change issues and the move towards more flexible buildings. This exhibition shows the award-winners.
