The Making of 56 Southwark Bridge Road at Ability Media Centre

Architype's new Creative Media Training Centre at 56 Southwark Bridge Road transforms a disused Victorian library into a stunning scheme comprising a dynamic mix of community training, creative media, and commercial activities.

A series of contemporary architectural interventions subtly enhance the historic facade, whilst dramatically reconfiguring the interior.

The capacity of the existing building has been effectively doubled by extending the basement area to provide studio spaces, inserting new media spaces into an existing void in the streetscape, and extending upwards with a new third floor pavilion.

A rigorous ecological agenda is central to the project, with the integration of a biomass wood pellet heating system, solar thermal panels and an innovative passive ventilation strategy incorporating a full building height 'light-vent guide'. A vertical axis wind turbine is due to be installed later this year.

An exhibition of the design and construction of the building will be on show in the ground floor of the building and Architype will give a tour and talk about the project at 3pm on Saturday 12 July.
