"Figure and field" is one of the standards we use looking at paintings.
Painters with a creative bent are apt to question these standards. As someone whose own values have habitually been questioned by the established order, Dorian Aroyo equally questions their standards.
Dorian Aroyo's works of gay heroes and heroines, both past and present, are figures portrayed against a field of texts that would deny them of their rights. Depicted in gold leaf and colour, these heroes and heroines become icons that efface the offending texts. Other works explore and subvert the convention of the figure set politely or comfortably within its fields.
