The only British writer who might be considered part of the "beat" movement, Alexander Trocchi, a Scot of Italian descent, left his native Glasgow to establish himself in France and America before returning to Britain a drug addict and potent celebrity.

Readings from his best-known novels follow John Calder's account of his life.
