Wobbly start for Millennium Bridge

The Millennium Bridge is to remain closed for several months but chief engineer Tony Fitzpatrick says that he "very much hopes" that the bridge will reopen before the end of the year.

At the end of June engineers were reported to be near a solution to the wobble effect which closed the bridge just three days after it opened. The closure had been expected to last just a few weeks but the "pedestrian induced vibration" has proved hard to eliminate.

City Police sealed off the bridge at 10pm on the Monday night after the Corporation of London had posted an official closure notice at the north end.
