Great thai food
I have been to the Hartley a few times when meeting a friend from over the road at The Jam Factory. The staff are always friendly and the pub has a nice relaxed atmosphere.

Recently they have started doing Thai food which until this week I I had not tried. I live the other end of Bermondsey Street so normally get takeaways closer to home but on Friday I thought I would get a takeaway from the Hartley. I was really impressed. Great value for money, really fresh ingredients and very tasty.

In fact, I liked it so much I then went back on Monday and had a thai meal in the pub.

I can really recommend it !!! For anyone who lives in the Jam Factory or near by this place is a must !!

Decent food & drink
now gone thai, but the food remains very good. Not really a place for a summer day (no garden), but great for a rainy day. Friendly and professional staff
Outstanding - a return to form
Having been a long-time patron of the Hartley, I had noticed a slow decline over the past year. However, with the recent return of their old chef, things seemed to be on the up. We'd been there recently for their burgers (always good), but it had been a while since we'd had a "proper" meal there.

Saturday night did not disappoint - starters of a thick, meaty Polish soup and fresh scallops were generous and delicious. Mains of a ricotta stuffed chicken breast (juicy and perfectly seasoned) and an enourmous ham hock were very satisfying. Having lived in Germany, where a ham-hock is a favourite delicacy, this was as good as anything I'd had there.

We were too full for desert, but service was attentive and the atmosphere relaxed. On the whlole, a great meal, and a place we're happy to call our local.

Change of management?
Has there been a change of management here? ive not been in for ages and then my 2 recent visits were a shock, the staff were listless to the point of rudeness and the atmosphere had gone very strange...none of the friendliness i remember.in fact it reminded me of the pagoda (its former incarnation...)

i wouldnt recommend this place to anyone. i also had visitors who went in, separately from me, and they said the same.

Good value
Living nearby the Hartley is my number one choice if I want to share some good food with friends at a reasonable price. The wine list is small but interesting (look out for the Carmenere) and you cannot lose with their tuna dish.
Excellent service and good food
We went to eat at The Hartley at 7pm on a Thursday, having booked using the TasteLondon deal. The service was just great - friendly, personal, attentive. The food was good too, although without the 2 for 1 deal it would be rather pricey. However, it's worth going back just to be looked after so well!
