I gave them a last try
Previously when we went to canteen for breakfast they had just opened and the service was bad so we thought we'd give it another go as it should be sorted by now.
It was a hot day and we got seated quicker this time , good start.
Ordered eggs (which said fried) on bubble and squeak. I asked for them to be poached. Fifteen minutes later they arrived fried - I said fine , I have them like that. Bubble tasted old - potatoes had that grey sheen - Improvement on eggs as they're not using the metal ring to fry them anymore. Expensive and not worth the grief - never going back.
Avoid if you can.
Really tasty
We had dinner here last Saturday night and enjoyed it. We had just spent over an hour waiting for our food at Studio 6 at Gabriel's Wharf where the manager admitted they were having problems in the kitchen, so we left and arrived at Canteen feeling very hungry and frazzled. The boss there couldn't have been nicer, we told him why we were starving and they were really quick with the food. There were a couple of little mistakes made with our order but the staff were great about it and everyone was really friendly. Big contrast in customer service from the place we had just left! I had the pie and mash and it was really tasty, and the desserts were good too. Will definitely go back.
Very nice!
My husband and I have now been to Canteen several times along with friends. I have always found the service and the food very good, the staff are friendly and efficient. The wine list is good and the food well priced. The choice is also very varied.I would recommend this restaurant for either a pre theatre meal as well as being a great place to meet up with friends.
Fine, not great
Went for dinner with the wife last night to canteen. I love the builidng and the decor, except that the low hanging lamp over our table (on the back wall) was too bright and 'in your face'.

Menu nice and simple, loved the fact that ALL wines are available by the glass - such a simple, effective idea. Had a lovely glass of Zuccardi Malbec (Argentina) with my lamb stew.

Food was generally good, the wife had a lovely fresh piece of smoked Haddock. We ordered a side dish of 'Tomato Salad' which consisted of a small bowl of halved tomatoes wit holive oil on them - not impressed at all. Treacle tart - OK, nothing special.

Service - host/ manager was great and had the place controlled and had great customer service standards. Our waiter was smelly, really awful pungent BO that was awful when trying to eat! He was friendly but I'd rather have a miserable non-smelly waiter.

£50 for the 2 of us including service, main courses only plus shared a desert. 3 glasses of wine in total. Not bad value for the area.
