Tate Local at Tate Modern
Oil tanks at Tate Modern
Bankside Power Station's disused oil tanks will be a key attraction for the expanded Tate Modern

Tate Modern hosts a day of fun, free activities for all residents of Southwark & Lambeth.

A chance find out more about the Transforming Tate Modern project which recently received planning permission from Southwark Council.

Local residents are invited to experience a rare viewing of the stunning former oil tanks under the Turbine Hall. These dramatic raw spaces will be at the heart of the new extension.

There will also be a chance to catch a glimpse of a one-off performance involving a group of local residents which has been devised by the Cholmondeleys, one of the foremost contemporary dance companies in Britain.

A range of drop-in workshops will keep local families with kids of all ages entertained. This will include family portraits with a twist, building model cities out of recycled materials, and transforming everyday objects into an exciting artwork.

A family picnic area will provide a place for kids to refuel with a limited number of free smoothies & brick biscuits and a special art magician doing tricks.

Each visitor will also be able to browse the collections and see one of the summer exhibitions for free. There will be the choice of Futurism, the story of a small group of radical Italian artists working just before the outbreak of World War 1, and Per Kirkeby, a Danish painter inspired by nature, art history and popular culture.

All events are free and drop-in, apart from the oil tank site visits which must be booked in advance by Friday 3 July on 07811 218102 or [email protected]
