The independent bookshop opened just days before Christmas last year and has seen a growth in trade during its first twelve months. Marie Phillips, who works with fellow booksellers Matthew Crockatt and Adam Powell, said that it had been "a great year" with new people coming in every day.

There is now a monthly poetry parlour hosted by local poet Anna Robinson and the shop – recently nominated for the Best Independent Bookshop award – even has its own weekly Lit Bits show on Resonance FM (Thursdays at 3pm on 101.4FM).

Authors who have visited to sign books include Zadie Smith and James Meek. Among guests at the anniversary party was Sarah Waters.

This week Hannah Renier signed copies of her book Lambeth Past (£15.95) at a special open evening when customers included author Robert Irwin and Big Issue founder John Bird.

The shop, which hosts art exhibitions, is currently selling a selction of Sue Morgan prints.

Crockatt & Powell, 119 Lower Marsh (020 7928 0243); open daily including Christmas Eve.
