London Assembly member Val Shawcross has launched a new event which aims to celebrate the contribution of Lambeth and Southwark’s older residents to our community.
The awards are supported by Age Concern Lambeth, Age Concern Southwark and London Fire Brigade along with Lambeth Pensioners' Action Group and Southwark Pensioners' Action Group.
Local people are warmly invited to nominate friends and relatives for one of nine awards, ranging from the 'Good Carer' award to honours for voluntary work, environmental work and creative achievement. There is also an award for a local group run by or for older people.
A winner will be selected from both Lambeth and Southwark boroughs for each category. The winners will be announced at a City Hall ceremony in November.
"I was delighted to be approached with this idea," says Valerie Shawcross, London Assembly member for the Lambeth and Southwark constituency.
"Older people make a huge contribution – I work closely with many people in this age group across my constituency and a lot of people are involved in a huge number of activities. I think it's a great idea to recognise this – this not only celebrates the achievements of older people but also the diversity of our community."
• Nomination forms can be downloaded from Val Shawcross's website. The closing date for nominations is 15 October 2007. All nominees must be aged over 60 and live in either Lambeth or Southwark.
