Tesco Express to open in Blackfriars Circus development

Tesco has applied to Southwark Council for a premises licence for the new store which is less than 300 metres away from the Borough Road Tesco Express.

When the store opens, SE1 will have 13 Tesco outlets: one full-size supermarket in Old Kent Road, two Tesco Metro branches (Tooley Street and Elephant & Castle) and ten Tesco Express convenience stores.

Sainsbury's is soon to add its twelfth Sainsbury's Local store in SE1 when the Westminster Bridge Road shop opens.

• Earlier this week Southwark council leader Peter John and cabinet members Mark Williams and Stephanie Cryan visited Blackfriars Circus to view The Didbin Apartments, the block of 56 flats the council has bought from Barratt to be let at council rents.
