In his letter to the PM, Neil Coyle wrote: "Borough Market is a microcosm of London. It hosts millions of people every year and is one of the liveliest, fun places filled with people from all walks of life and across the globe.

"It was attacked so cruelly by hate-filled individuals specifically because it represents somewhere so welcoming, metropolitan and emblematic of all that is great about our capital city and country."

Mr Coyle went on to pay tribute to the emergency services and all the local people who came to the aid of those affected by the terrorist attack.

He told Mrs May: "It would be enormously well received if you could formally visit the area and meet with some of the people directly affected as well as the business who must not lose out as a result of an attack on our way of life."
