The industrial action by drivers and supervisors began at 3am on Friday.

First operates 94 bus routes across London, including the riverside RV1 linking Covent Garden with Tower Gateway via Waterloo Bridge and Tower Bridge.

The dispute centres on the disparity in drivers' pay between London's regulated bus operators, which unions claim can be as much as £6,000 a year.

"This strike has been solid. It's a clear indication of our members' determination to get a fair deal," say Peter Kavanagh of the Unite trade union.

"It's time for First group to return to the negotiating table with an offer that our members deserve. First group is extremely profitable – it's only right that these workers should get a fair share of the rewards."

A further 48 hour strike is planned beginning Friday 12 September.
