He will succeed Canon John O'Toole who leaves St George's Cathedral at the end of December to take up a new role as national ecumenical officer for the Catholic Church in England and Wales.

Fr Hearn was ordained priest in 2006 after a career in banking.

Having served as assistant priest at the parish of St Thomas of Canterbury in the city of Canterbury, he is currently chaplain to Elmlea Prison on the Isle of Sheppey.

The new dean will arrive at St George's in early March.

During January and February Fr Philip Smith – an assistant priest at the cathedral – will serve as acting dean.
